Our flagship 4x4, the Lexus LX570, seats 8 and is Lexus's take on the legendary Land Cruiser. Adjustable air suspension, rear seatback screens, heated and cooled seats, and full-time 4×4 make it the ideal vehicle for reaching Mauna Kea's summit or exploring off-road.

The Mauna Kea Access Road climbs from Saddle Road to the Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet, then continues unpaved all the way to the summit observatories at 13,796 feet. The paved lower section is open to all vehicles. The upper section, a steep 4.5-mile gravel and lava track, requires a 4x4 or AWD vehicle.
That requirement is real. The grade is steep and the loose gravel surface makes conventional 2WD vehicles unpredictable on the descent, especially in fog or rain. Signs at the visitor center are clear: 4x4 or AWD only above the station.
Our 4x4 and AWD-equipped SUVs and trucks handle the summit road without issue. The Lexus LX570 with full-time 4x4 and adjustable air suspension is the easiest vehicle to drive up here. Can't find a Jeep rental on the Big Island? Our 4x4s are just as capable on the summit road and seat up to 8 passengers so the whole group rides together. If reaching the summit or stopping at the visitor center for free stargazing is on your list, book one of our 4x4 or AWD vehicles and you are all set.
A few things to know before you go: dress warm (summit temps regularly drop below freezing), spend at least 30 minutes at the visitor center before heading higher to acclimate, and check road conditions before the drive. The summit road closes during winter storms and high wind events.
Kona to the visitor center is about 55 miles and takes roughly 1.5 hours. Hilo to the visitor center is about 34 miles and takes around an hour. We deliver to Kona (KOA), Hilo (ITO), or your hotel so you can leave whenever conditions are right.
